Are chiropractic services covered by OHIP?
In Ontario, the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) does not cover the cost of most chiropractic services. That means if you’re seeing a chiropractor for back pain, neck tension, headaches, or posture issues, you’ll likely be paying out of pocket or through private insurance.
There used to be some public funding for chiropractic care, but OHIP delisted it in 2004 — and since then, chiropractic has been considered an “extended health service,” much like massage therapy, physiotherapy (outside of hospital settings), or dental care.
So How Can You Get Chiropractic Covered?
Here are a few ways Ontario residents can get support for chiropractic care:
- ✅ Private Extended Health Benefits
Most employer-sponsored benefit plans (like through Sun Life, Manulife, Blue Cross, Green Shield, etc.) include some level of chiropractic coverage. You usually get a set dollar amount or number of visits per year. At YFS, we can provide receipts for reimbursement — and depending on your plan, you might not pay much out of pocket at all. - ✅ Health Spending Accounts (HSAs)
If you’re self-employed or have an HSA through your benefits plan, chiropractic is an eligible expense. It’s also a smart way to get tax-deductible healthcare if you’re running your own business. - ✅ Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA Claims)
Been in a car accident? You may be entitled to chiropractic treatment covered through auto insurance. We can help guide you through that process if you’re eligible. - ✅ Workplace Injuries (WSIB)
If your pain is the result of a workplace injury, chiropractic may be covered by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). There’s a process to follow, but it’s worth exploring.
