Some exercises or internal assessments may feel awkward, but they should never be painful when done properly.
Let’s Talk About What Really Happens — And Why It’s Totally Worth It
Pelvic floor physio has a bit of a rep.
You’ve heard it helps with things like:
- Leaking when you sneeze
- Pain during sex
- Postpartum recovery
- Low back or hip tension
- That “heaviness” you feel after standing too long
But then someone says something like,
“You know they go inside, right?”
…and suddenly you’re wondering:
“Wait — is pelvic floor physiotherapy actually uncomfortable?”
Short Answer: It Can Be Uncomfortable — But It Should Never Be Painful, Scary, or Traumatizing
Pelvic physio is about understanding and working with your deep core and pelvic muscles — not just treating symptoms. Yes, sometimes that involves internal assessment or treatment. But only if it’s necessary, explained clearly, and you give full consent.
Here’s What That Actually Looks Like:
✅ Step 1: We Talk — Like, Actually Talk
We cover:
- What’s bothering you
- Your history (injuries, pregnancies, surgeries, etc.)
- Your goals (no more leaks? better sex? core control?)
- What you’re comfortable with
👉 You’re in control from the start.
✅ Step 2: We Assess Your Movement First
Pelvic issues are often connected to:
- Poor breathing mechanics
- Hip or low back tension
- Weak core firing patterns
So we may look at how you squat, breathe, bend, and move before doing anything internal.
✅ Step 3: Internal Assessment — If You Choose It
If internal work is appropriate — and you agree — your therapist may:
- Gently insert a gloved, lubricated finger vaginally or rectally
- Assess how your pelvic floor contracts, relaxes, and responds to movement
- Identify tension, weakness, or coordination issues
- Teach you how to properly engage (or release!) those muscles
It’s not a pap test. No stirrups. No speculum. No surprises.
And again: It only happens with your full, informed consent.
So… Is It Uncomfortable?
Sometimes, yes — in the same way deep tissue massage or physio on a tight hip can be a little awkward or tender.
But:
- It should never be painful
- It should never feel invasive or violating
- It should always be explained as you go
- You can stop, pause, or change direction at any time
👉 And if internal work isn’t your thing? Cool. We can still help with external techniques, breathwork, posture, and functional retraining.
Why Bother If It’s a Bit Uncomfortable?
Because honestly? The results are worth it.
Pelvic physio can:
- Reduce pain during sex
- Help you sneeze/laugh/run without leaking
- Improve core stability and posture
- Ease pressure or heaviness from prolapse
- Support C-section or tear recovery
- Help you feel strong and connected to your body again
