How are custom orthotics made?

Custom orthotics are made based on a thorough evaluation of your feet, gait, and posture. Here’s what the process involves.

What Makes Custom Orthotics “Custom” — And When Are They Worth It?

You’ve probably heard that orthotics can help with foot pain, flat arches, plantar fasciitis, or even back and knee issues.

But here’s the real question:
What actually makes an orthotic “custom” — and how do we know it’s the right one for your body?

At YFS (Your Form Sux), we don’t hand you a pre-made insert and call it a day. We use orthotics as a tool — not a cure-all — to correct biomechanics, reduce compensation, and support healthy, functional movement patterns.

Here’s exactly how custom orthotics are made — the right way.

🧠 Step 1: Full-Body Movement Assessment

We don’t start with your feet — we start with how your whole body moves.

Because foot dysfunction is rarely just about the foot. It’s often tied to:

  • Poor ankle mobility
  • Hip/knee alignment issues
  • Gait compensations
  • Previous injuries
  • Muscle imbalances higher up the chain

At YFS, we assess:

  • Your standing and walking posture
  • Dynamic gait (how you walk and run)
  • Squat, lunge, and single-leg stability
  • Foot arch behaviour under load (not just at rest)

This step ensures we’re not just treating a symptom — we’re correcting a system.

🦶 Step 2: Foot Scanning or 3D Molding

Once we know what’s going on functionally, we capture the structure of your foot using:

  • 3D foot scanning with pressure mapping technology, or
  • Foam impression molding for precise shape and contour

This step captures:

  • Arch height
  • Heel and forefoot alignment
  • Weight distribution
  • Pressure points
  • Foot length, width, and asymmetry

We don’t just cast your foot “as is” — we assess it in a neutral, corrected position, which reflects how your foot should function in motion.

🧬 Step 3: Custom Prescription Based on You

Here’s where the “custom” part actually matters.

Using the data from your foot scan plus your movement assessment, we build an orthotic prescription based on:

  • Your weight, activity level, and goals
  • Whether you’re standing all day, lifting heavy, walking, or running
  • Your footwear type (work boots, runners, dress shoes, cleats, etc.)
  • Whether you need cushioning, correction, or both

We determine:

  • The level of control or flexibility in the orthotic
  • Heel cup depth, arch support level, forefoot posting, etc.
  • Whether the orthotic needs to correct a mechanical issue (like overpronation or supination)

No generic templates. No guesswork. Just a device that matches your actual foot, body, and lifestyle.

🛠 Step 4: Fabrication by a Certified Lab

Once your data and prescription are locked in, your orthotic is built by a specialized orthotic lab — typically using:

  • Carbon fibre or plastic shell for structure
  • EVA foam, cork, or other materials for cushioning
  • Topcover matched to your activity (anti-microbial, moisture-wicking, etc.)

Turnaround time is usually 7–10 business days, and you’ll be notified when they’re ready for fitting.

🧩 Step 5: Fitting + Integration with Your Rehab Plan

This is where most places stop — but not us.

At YFS, we don’t just hand you the orthotics and wish you luck. We:

  • Check the fit in your shoes
  • Test how your body moves with the orthotics in place
  • Make sure they’re not creating new compensations
  • Adjust your rehab or strength plan if needed to match the new support

In other words: we integrate your orthotics into a bigger strategy for pain relief, performance, and long-term movement efficiency.

Because an orthotic shouldn’t just feel better — it should help you move better.

🧠 When Are Custom Orthotics Worth It?

They’re ideal when you’re dealing with:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Flat feet or collapsed arches
  • Overpronation or supination
  • Heel pain, shin splints, or knee tracking issues
  • Hip or low back pain linked to gait or stance
  • Standing or walking for long hours
  • History of foot surgery or deformities
  • Recurrent injuries that stem from ground-up mechanics

But here’s the YFS take:
We don’t push orthotics on everyone.
We use them when they’ll truly change the way your body functions under load.

If your form sucks — and your feet are part of the problem — then orthotics are one piece of the fix.
