How to clean and maintain your orthotics

Proper care and cleaning of your custom orthotics can help prolong their lifespan and effectiveness.

How to Care for Your Orthotics (So They Keep Supporting You)

You got orthotics — whether custom or off-the-shelf — to support your feet, fix your form, and reduce pain.

But like anything that works with your body 8–12+ hours a day, they need regular care if they’re going to do their job properly (and not smell like a gym bag left in the sun).

At YFS (Your Form Sux), we want your gear to perform as well as you do — and that includes your insoles. Here’s how to keep them clean, comfortable, and working long-term.

🧼 1. Clean Them Weekly (At Least)

How to clean your orthotics:

  • Remove them from your shoes
  • Wipe them down with a damp cloth and mild soap
  • Use cool or lukewarm water — never hot (can warp the materials)
  • Let them air dry fully before placing back in shoes
  • Avoid soaking or machine washing

Pro tip: If your orthotics have a fabric top layer, use a soft-bristle brush to gently scrub dirt or sweat buildup.

👃 2. Deodorize Without Destroying

Smelly insoles? Totally normal — especially if you’re active.

Do this:

  • Sprinkle baking soda on top, let sit overnight, brush off
  • Use a natural shoe spray or essential oil mist (tea tree, lavender, eucalyptus)
  • Keep them dry between uses — moisture traps odor-causing bacteria

Avoid:

  • Harsh disinfectants or bleach
  • Dryer sheets (leave residue)
  • Perfume sprays (mask smell, damage materials)

👟 3. Rotate Your Footwear

Your orthotics perform better when your shoes aren’t always damp or compressed.

Rotate between at least two pairs of shoes if you wear them daily — especially after workouts or long shifts. Let both your shoes and orthotics fully dry out between uses.

🕵️ 4. Inspect for Wear Every 3–6 Months

Even quality orthotics break down over time — especially with consistent use.

Check for:

  • Cracks or compression in the arch
  • Worn-down heel cups or edges
  • Shifting or sliding inside your shoes
  • New pain, tension, or changes in how you walk

If you notice any of these:

  • You might need a replacement (especially if they’re 12+ months old)
  • You may need a re-assessment (your body might have changed)
  • Could be time for a shoe upgrade (old shoes sabotage good orthotics)

🧳 5. Travel Smart

On the move? Don’t let your orthotics get wrecked in transit.

  • Pack them in a clean pouch or zip bag — not loose in your gym bag
  • Don’t crush them under weight — they can lose shape
  • Avoid hot cars or direct sun (warping risk)
  • If they get wet, remove and let them air dry flat

🗓 Bonus: Replace Every 12–18 Months (Depending on Use)

Even top-tier orthotics don’t last forever.

You may need new ones closer to 12 months if you:

  • Walk, run, or train daily
  • Stand on hard surfaces for work
  • Sweat a lot
  • Have foot, knee, or back pain history
  • Use the same pair in multiple shoes

We recommend:
Annual check-ins with your YFS provider to reassess fit, function, and foot health.

✅ Bottom Line: Clean Gear = Better Movement = Longer-Lasting Support

Orthotics aren’t magic. But when they’re well-maintained, they’ll support everything you do — walking, lifting, running, recovering.

At YFS, we don’t just hand you insoles and call it a day.
We teach you how to move better, recover smarter, and take care of the tools that help your body work the way it should.
