Acupuncture is generally safe with few side effects. Learn about the rare risks and how to avoid them.
Let’s start with the good news: acupuncture is generally very safe — especially when performed by a licensed, properly trained practitioner. But like any form of treatment, it’s not 100% side-effect free.
At YFS (Your Form Sux), we’re all about informed choices. So if you’re considering acupuncture for pain relief, stress, or recovery support, here’s what you might experience — and why it’s usually nothing to stress about.
🩹 Common (and Totally Normal) Side Effects
These are mild, short-lived, and usually part of the body’s natural response to treatment:
- Soreness or tenderness: A dull ache or slight soreness where needles were inserted, especially in tight muscles. Typically fades within 24 hours.
- Minor bruising: Small bruises may appear at insertion points — not painful, just a bit of discolouration.
- Fatigue or light-headedness: You might feel deeply relaxed, even drowsy. It’s your nervous system shifting gears. Rest and hydration usually help.
- Temporary symptom flare: Sometimes symptoms get slightly worse before improving — a known “healing response.”
⚠️ Less Common Side Effects
Rare, especially in a professional clinical setting — but worth knowing:
- Dizziness or fainting: Can occur if you’re nervous, haven’t eaten, or are needle-sensitive. We adjust to your comfort level.
- Emotional release: Acupuncture can trigger emotional shifts — a safe, cathartic response to releasing tension.
- Worsening of certain conditions: Very rare, but possible. If it happens, we pause and reassess. Acupuncture isn’t a fix-all, and we won’t pretend it is.
🚫 Serious Side Effects? Extremely Rare.
When done by trained professionals, complications are exceptionally rare. Here’s what we always guard against:
- Infection: We use only sterile, single-use needles.
- Organ puncture: Scary-sounding but virtually unheard of with proper training and anatomical knowledge.
